Program Features and Requirements

  • Skills Include:
    1. Using a backboard for a standing spinal victim on land
    2. Applying an anatomic splint
    3. Throwing assists and reaching assists with equipment
    4. Passive submerged victim rescue in shallow water
  • Shallow Water Attendant course designed for facilities with water depth up to 4 feet.  This certification is not to be used at a facility with water depth greater than 4 feet.  All training can be completed in water less than 4 feet and the skills are specifically designed for shallow water rescues.  This course includes all the knowledge and skills in the Lifeguarding course (except for the deep water skills), plus:
    • Rescue approach - walking
    • Walking assist
    • Beach drag
    • Front-and-back carry
  • Waterfront Lifeguarding and Waterpark Lifeguarding are stand-alone courses.  These courses are no longer dependant on having separate certification in Lifeguarding.  They are inclusive of the content of the Lifeguarding course, so lifeguards with the Waterpark or Waterfront Lifeguarding certification are also eligible to work at traditional pool facilities.
    • Waterfront Lifeguarding courses includes new skills in shallow-water line search, mask and fins, and head-first surface dive with mask and fins.
  • Simple bridge courses allow shallow water attendants and lifeguards to gain additional skills when wanting to work at an alternative facility.
